Don't be left out of the count for your community
Census workers will be in the field May 1 through July 10 conducting interviews with addresses that did not return a Census form. They will visit up to six times, each time leaving a door hanger with a phone number on it that you can call to schedule a visit to be counted.

A census taker is a person from your community who is hired by the Census Bureau to ensure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. The census taker's primary responsibility is to collect census information from residences that have not sent back their 2010 Census form.

If you didn't send back your form, you may receive a visit from a census taker. If a census taker visits you, here's what you should do:

  • First ask to see their ID. All census workers carry official government badges marked with just their name; they may also have a "U.S. Census Bureau" bag.
  • The census taker will never ask to enter your home
  • If you're still not certain about their identity, please call the Regional Census Centers to confirm they are employed by the Census Bureau 313-396-5200.
  • Answer the census form questions for your entire household (you must be at least 15 years old to answer questions) so that the census taker can record the results for submission to the Census Bureau.
  • If anyone asks for your Social Security numbers, credit card information or bank information, don't give them the information, close the door and call the police.

  • If a census taker has not visited your home or you have a question about your participation with the census, call your Census office at 313-396-5200.

The Census estimates it will cost about $56 per household to visit a home, compared to $0.42 if the form was mailed back by April 19th.

In 2008 alone, Census-related statistics determined federal funding for $287 million worth of programs in Washtenaw County - from highway planning to energy assistance for low income households, according to the Brooklings Institution. Each resident is estimated to have a value of $826 annually in census-related grants, loans, and funding.

The U.S. Census is the oldest running census in the World (since 1790). The U.S. Constitution and Section 221 of Title 13 of the U.S. Code require your participation.
